Benelac Yeast Cell Wall
Dairytech Nutrition imports Benelac Yeast Cell Wall from the USA and is the base ingredient in Calfmax and TreatScour. We embarked on seeking rumen enhancement/feed conversion efficiency products to match the massive improvement in dairy cows genetics of the last fifty years. Our nutritional development in Australia has not matched our herds’ genetic improvement, and largely responsible for the widening gap between US dairy productivity and Australia’s; apart from metabolic/fertility issues arising from sub-optimal nutrition. Benelac is just one such product aimed at improved feed conversion efficiency, cow health and fertility. Benelac contains MOS and Beta glucans.
Feed Rate: Benelac is a 3g dose rate for adult cattle, 2g for yearlings and 1g for calves.
LACTAMUUN & BENELAC
Around 2009 we were faced with the issue of Tylan becoming an S4 drug and requiring a vet script to continue including it in our dairy premixes for buffering. At the same time we were trialling yeast culture in several herds with Tylan removed and saw no change in the effects of rumen pH on manure consistency. In fact, manure scores rose to very good levels indicating excellent rumen health and function.
Of course, yeast has many other benefits to digestion, it is feed for rumen bacteria driving increasing numbers of fibre digesters as well as lactic acid utilising bacteria. This is what we assumed caused the improvement in manure consistency. We conducted OFF/ON/OFF trials and sampled manure for lab testing of starch in manure and undigested fibre. The lab results proved conclusively there was less starch and less undigested fibre in manure suggesting improved digestion which must result in more milk per kg of feed and stable rumen pH.
We changed our yeast inclusion to yeast cell wall, a further refinement of yeast culture with greater benefits due to MOS and beta glucans being released as yeast cell wall is hydrolysed. The benefits of this are clearly explained in the following pages, but essentially, MOS is a binder of the pathogens of E. Coli and samonella while Beta glucans bind mycotoxins.
Benelac is just hydrolysed yeast cell wall. Lactamuun is the same yeast blended with yucca. Yucca suppresses excess rumen ammonia production saving energy required to expell this surplus rumen ammonia, then that energy can be converted to milk. We also ran separate trials with yucca alone, then in combination with Benelac. We believed from results recorded there was a synergy between the yeast and yucca, hence the combination in Lactamuun.
